Understand your Audience.

Different audiences respond to different messages. Understand who your audience is and what’s important to them. It would be great to identify demographics and psychographics through market research, but gathering insight on your audience can be as simple as calling current and prospective clients and asking.

Pick a Tone.

Preferably the one that resonates with your audience. Effective copywriting for mature Americans will be dramatically different from copy written for Tweens, which will be dramatically different from copy written for C-level executives.

Nail the Headline.

Time’s up. Pencils down. Did you get their attention?

Focus on the Benefits.

Consumer and corporate audiences don’t care about you or your business. They care about themselves and their businesses. Effective copy identifies your audience’s pain and convinces them that your product or service will make their lives easier.

Keep it Tight.

Ever known anyone who worked at the Department of Redundancy Department? Keep your copy short and tight. Everyone’s brain is full.

Bend the Rules.

Powerful copywriting defies many of the rules we learned in English. Quality copywriters worry more about being persuasive than sounding smart.

Include a Call to Action.

Always, always, always tell your readers what you want them to do next. Buy. Call. Register. Donate. Sign up.  If appropriate, add a timeframe to create a sense of urgency.
